Advancing Excellence in Glaucoma Education and Assessment

The Ophthalmology Foundation Glaucoma Subspecialty Examination is being developed to recognize advanced clinical knowledge and contemporary understanding in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma.

Created in collaboration with an international faculty of glaucoma specialists and ophthalmic educators, the examination is designed to reflect modern glaucoma practice, integrating clinical science, imaging, medical management, laser treatment, and surgical decision-making.

The examination aims to support ophthalmologists seeking to demonstrate advanced glaucoma competency within a globally recognized educational framework.

An Internationally Developed Curriculum

The OF Glaucoma Examination is being developed using internationally recognized educational standards and contemporary clinical practice guidelines. The curriculum is being aligned to the American Academy of Ophthalmology Basic and Clinical Science Course (BCSC) to ensure the examination reflects internationally recognized glaucoma education and current best practice.

The examination will place strong emphasis on clinical interpretation, patient management, and evidence-based decision-making.

The curriculum is expected to include a broad range of glaucoma-related topics, including:

  • Primary and secondary glaucoma
  • Optic nerve assessment
  • Glaucoma imaging
  • Visual field interpretation
  • Medical glaucoma management
  • Laser therapies
  • Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
  • Complex glaucoma surgery
  • Pediatric glaucoma
  • Ocular hypertension and glaucoma risk assessment

Eligibility

Candidates will normally be expected to have:

  • Passed the Ophthalmology Foundation Clinical Ophthalmology Examination or an equivalent recognized ophthalmic examination of a similar standard
  • Relevant clinical ophthalmology and/or glaucoma experience

Examination Language

The OF Glaucoma Subspecialty Examination will be delivered in English only.

Examination Fees

Fees will follow the Ophthalmology Foundation World Bank Index tiered fee structure, supporting equitable international access across different economic regions.

Certification

Successful candidates will receive an OF Glaucoma Subspecialty Certificate.

Candidates who have also passed the OF Clinical Ophthalmology Examination, or an equivalent recognized examination accepted by the OF, may additionally receive the designation:
