Having a mentor through the Ophthalmology Foundation’s One-to-One Mentor Program has been one of the most transformative experiences of my professional journey. As an ophthalmology resident for two and a half years, I feel truly fortunate to have been connected, since May 2024, with Dr. Eduardo Mayorga — a mentor whose dedication, expertise, and unwavering support have profoundly shaped my development as both an educator and an aspiring ophthalmologist. Dr. Mayorga guided me through the early stages of my teaching journey, patiently showing me how to design effective PowerPoint presentations and deliver impactful lectures. His insights elevated my communication skills and gave me the confidence to teach with clarity and purpose. He also encouraged my academic growth and supported me in obtaining ARVO membership in training, a milestone that strengthened my research foundation in ophthalmology. This opportunity opened new doors, allowing me to engage more deeply in scientific inquiry and broaden my research horizons. Despite the physical distance—me in Egypt and him in Argentina — Dr. Mayorga has remained consistently present throughout our mentorship. Our online meetings were always filled with thoughtful advice, continuous encouragement, and genuine support. I regularly shared updates on my progress, and he responded each time with guidance that kept me motivated and moving forward. One of the most valuable lessons he taught me was how to integrate AI into ophthalmology education, including the use of ophthalmology simulation AI to enhance training for younger residents. He emphasized the importance of passing knowledge to the next generation and keeping the cycle of mentorship alive—something that deeply resonated with me. In ophthalmology, mentorship is not just beneficial, it is essential. Having a mentor like Dr. Mayorga has made all the difference. We remain connected today, continuing to share challenges, insights, and growth. I am sincerely grateful for his mentorship and the enduring impact it has had on my career.
