The Ophthalmology Foundation is pleased to share the launch of the African Ophthalmology Council’s (AOC) Bruce Spivey Skills Development Award. This award is given in honor of Dr. Bruce Spivey, Vice President and founding board member of the Ophthalmology Foundation, who supported the formation of the AOC. The award will allow a working ophthalmologist or allied professional to spend 4-6 weeks at the Eye Foundation Hospital or at the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology to learn specific skills that they feel they need.

The training award includes:
- 3rd IUSG Basic Course in Uveitis in Africa,13-17 April 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia application deadline January 31st. Register here. Or:
- Orbis /Haag Streit/Alcon Phaco emulsification intense simulation and wetlab training during AOC 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa. This scholarship is available only to those registered to attend the AOC 2026 conference.
The scholarship will cover course fees, travel to the course, allowance support, and travel insurance.
Eligibility
- AOC members who were paid up in 2023/2024 and 2024/2025
- Must have license to practice in home country or be a trainee in a recognized training
program (proof required) - Must have confirmed admission or approved application to the eligible courses
- Age: all age groups eligible
- Countries: The scholarships are open to members from the African continent
- Not currently enrolled in any other course. (Associate members in training can apply)
- Must be a First-time beneficiary of AOC Scholarship Initiatives.
