Ophthalmology Foundation staff and volunteers attended the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) Congress 2025 in Bogotá, Colombia from 29 May – 2 June.

The Medical Education in Ophthalmology program was endorsed by the Ophthalmology Foundation and Pan-American Council of University Professors of Ophthalmology (PACUPO).
- Foundations of Medical Education, Friday, 30 May 2025 with Drs. Ana Gabriela Palis, Arturo Ramirez Miranda, Eduardo Mayorga, Eduardo Viteri Coronel, Juan Carlos Serna Ojeda, Ivo Ferreira, Valentina Franco Cárdenas, Andreas Paulo Di Luciano Rojas, and Alejandro Rodriguez Garcia.
- Ophthalmologists as Clinical Educators, Friday, 30 May 2025 with Drs. Karl Golnik, Helena Filipe, Jorge Valdez-Garcia, Maria Auxiliadora Monteiro Frazão, Van Charles Lansingh, Alejandro Navas Perez, Mathys Labuchange, and Maria Fernanda Abalem.
- Building an International Community of Medical Educators, Friday, 30 May 2025 with Jorge Valdez-Garcia, Allan Slomovic, Eduardo Mayorga, R.V Paul Chan, Eduardo Alfonso, and Helena Filipe
Separately, OF held a symposium, Empowering Clinical Educators: Strategies for Effective Teaching in Ophthalmology, Monday 2 June 2025 with 15 attendees. Presentations were given by Drs. Eduardo Mayorga, Helena Filipe, Ana Gabriela Palis, Jorge Valdez-Garcia, and Andreas di Luciano.


During the Opening Ceremony on Friday, 30 May, Dr. Eduardo Mayorga presented on Ophthalmology Foundation initiatives including examinations and faculty development.
The Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology Foundation’s Accreditation Program meeting established a partnership with OF and PAAO to encourage residency training programs to go through OF accreditation and recruit Pan-American Association members from various countries to be site visitors. Representatives were enthusiastic about these possibilities and had a productive discussion

Overall it was a successful meeting with a variety of outreach to attendees and we look forward to furthering our reach.
