The Ophthalmology Foundation hosted an ophthalmic educators symposium, “AI as a Clinical Learning Partner: Custom Chatbots, Prompting Strategies, Rubrics and More for Enhancing Medical Education ” on Friday, 17 October at AAO.

We were pleased to have 130 participants in attendance that engaged in discussions and practical demonstrations of technology in the teaching space.

The symposium aimed to empower participants to elevate their teaching skills by harnessing the power of AI to enhance and efficiently deliver educational activities. Chatbots, critical thinking, ChatGPT5, assessment of skills, simulation, and ethical considerations were discussed and participants engaged in thoughtful discussions. We thank everyone who attended and look forward to future workshops at AAO.

The Ophthalmology Foundation team was present in the exhibition to answer questions about faculty development programs, residency training program accreditation, international examinations, and IOFF Fellowships. Our Director of Examinations, Nicola Quilter, shared her reflections on this year’s meeting: “The AAO meeting was extremely productive. We received great interest in our examinations, fellowships, and educational initiatives. It was invaluable to connect with colleagues and partners—both at our booth and in scheduled meetings— to explore collaborations and share ideas to advance training and assessment in ophthalmology. I look forward to formalizing these partnerships through the MOUs that have now been sent.”

A big thank you to everyone who visited our booth and contributed to such a successful event!

We are thankful for our Board members for their continued leadership and commitment to improving global eye health. At a hybrid meeting during AAO they reviewed progress, discussed priorities for 2026, and welcomed new Directors. Together, we empower the next generation of ophthalmologists and ensure excellence in our field!
