The Ophthalmology Foundation celebrates our inaugural examinations day held on 26 March 2025 worldwide. We thank Nicola Quilter, Examinations Director, David Pyott, MDhc, Vice President and Chair for Examinations, Karl Golnik, MD, MEd, Chair for Examinations Working Committee, and the examinations team Rosie Hartley and Vicky Glossop and in their dedication and preparation for this day.

The Ophthalmology Foundation successfully conducted its first International Examination on 26th March 2025, with 92 candidates sitting the exam worldwide. Spanning 25 hours across multiple time zones, the event marked a major milestone in the Foundation’s commitment to delivering accessible, high-quality ophthalmic education and assessment. Strong collaboration between examination staff, center hosts, and our technical partner led to seamless execution. Nicola and her team provided constant communication leading up to the day and real-time support during the examinations.
The platform utilized to conduct the exam online performed well and was smooth, clear, and intuitive to use based on feedback received. While there were a few minor issues experienced due to external factors, there was quick resolution and planning to overcome these challenges in the next examinations.
Gratitude is extended to the local examination hosts for their professionalism, flexibility, and willingness to adapt under pressure. Their on-the-ground coordination made an immense difference in the confidence and comfort of our candidates.

The examination covered three core areas:
1. Visual Sciences
2. Optics, Refraction, and Instruments
3. Clinical Ophthalmology
For the Visual Sciences exam, 21 out of 39 candidates passed. In the Optics, Refraction, and Instruments, 12 out of 27 candidates passed. Finally, in the Clinical Ophthalmology exam, 19 out of 23 candidates passed.
This team effort, centered around strong and timely communication, has laid a solid foundation for the future of our international assessment delivery. The Foundation remains committed to continuously improving the quality of assessment and supporting the development of future ophthalmologists. As we look ahead, we are well-positioned to evolve and strengthen this program further.
Majdi Abdala, Libya
“I had the opportunity to sit for the Ophthalmology Foundation Examination in Clinical Ophthalmology on the 26th of March, and I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the organizing body for the highly professional and efficient manner in which the exam was conducted.
The online examination platform was exceptionally well-organized, intuitive to navigate, and technically reliable. Clear instructions were provided ahead of time, and the interface facilitated a smooth experience from start to finish. The technical support team was readily accessible and responsive throughout the exam session, which contributed greatly to a calm and focused environment.
I am particularly grateful for the clarity of the language used in the questions and the logical flow within each case. The scenarios were realistic, and the options presented required careful reasoning, encouraging candidates to apply knowledge rather than rely solely on memorization.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to the examination committee and the technical team behind the platform for their dedication and excellence. Their efforts truly reflect a strong commitment to upholding high standards in ophthalmology education and assessment.”
