Accreditation of ophthalmology resident training programs is essential to ensure that educational programs meet defined standards of quality. The Ophthalmology Foundation’s International Ophthalmology Training Program Accreditation will focus upon evaluating and refining programs, protecting the resident’s education, and ultimately improving patient care.
Programs can receive Basic Non-Surgical Accreditation, representing the minimum requirements for training, including a robust surgical wet lab training program. Advanced Surgical Accreditation can be achieved by programs graduating residents who are competent to perform basic ophthalmic surgical procedures.

Steps for Accreditation
Eligibility: For ophthalmology residency training programs with at least three years duration; must have a surgical wet lab training.
- Residency program completes a self-assessment.
- The Ophthalmology Foundation reviews the program’s eligibility.
- The accreditation evaluators review the self-assessment and complete a site visit.
- Final determination is made based on the evaluation.
