The Ophthalmology Foundation (OF) and the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COECSA) are pleased to announce a new partnership for their Visual Sciences and Optics, Refraction, and Instruments examinations.
This collaboration marks an important step in aligning assessment standards and strengthening ophthalmic education across the region. By working together, both organizations aim to enhance the quality, accessibility, and consistency of training and assessment for ophthalmology candidates.
A Unified Pathway
Under the new structure, the early stages of the examination process will now be jointly delivered and recognized by both OF and COECSA. Candidates will undertake the OF Visual Sciences and the OF Optics, Refraction, and Instruments under the harmonized framework.
Following these initial stages, candidates may progress to the clinical components of their respective pathways. For Ophthalmology Foundation candidates, this will be the OF Clinical Examination, successful completion of which leads to the award of Fellow of the International Ophthalmology Foundation (FIOF).
For COECSA candidates, the clinical pathway will comprise the COECSA written Clinical Examination, followed by the COECSA Practical VIVA and OSCE, leading to the award of Fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (FCOpth-ECSA).
This detailed flow chart illustrates this pathway:

Supporting Ophthalmology Training and Standards
This harmonization represents a significant advancement in the shared mission of OF and COECSA to support ophthalmology education and training globally.
The aligned pathway will ensure a consistent standard of assessment, strengthen collaboration between institutions, and provide candidates with a clear and recognized route towards professional qualification.
The Ophthalmology Foundation looks forward to continuing its work with COECSA in promoting excellence in ophthalmic education and ensuring that candidates across the region are supported through every stage of their professional journey.
